FAIRFIELD TOWNSHIP -- This is the time of year when you really start noticing all the litter alongside the roads, trash that was tossed during the winter.
And every year there's an effort to clean up the garbage.
You might think the sunshine would have Bill Glick thinking spring, but this PennDOT worker knows warm weather is on its way when he's out picking up trash along the highway.
"I have done this when it's been hot. I've done this when it's been freezing cold. So, this is a good day to do this," said Glick.
White plastic bags already line Route 180 near Montoursville. A group of employees hope drivers will use caution as they work their way up the median clearing debris that built up during the winter.
"Soda bottles, energy drinks, just you wouldn't believe the stuff people throw out the windows," said Jim Yeagle.
"There is always trash up here. It's a shame cause we live in this beautiful county and people treat it like a garbage dump," said Bill Glick.
It takes PennDOT crews about a week to fill up all the trash bags and to clear the roads near Montoursville. It's a project they would like more community members get involved with.
The Lycoming County landfill wants to make it easier for folks to clean up their communities too. Every year the county waives dumping fees for groups registered for The Great American Cleanup. The cleanup is a state-wide event where volunteers pick up trash to help keep their communities beautiful.
"Last year we brought in over four and half tons, which is almost 9,000 pounds. So it's a good amount. Considering people are bending over picking it up off the streets and the parks but I know there is more to be cleaned up," said Jason Yorks.
