CHESTNUTHILL TOWNSHIP -- Friends and family members are stunned after three people were killed early Thursday in a head-on crash in the Poconos.

Wreckage was scattered all across Route 115 near Effort early Thursday morning after a head-on crash claimed three lives: Nick Hicks, 26, of Effort; Trevor Roberts, 21, of Saylorsburg; and Haylee Rosenberg, 21, of Easton.

Troopers are still investigating what led up to this deadly crash along Route 115, but they can say dense fog and speed were likely both factors.

The crash shut down Route 115 for hours as crews worked to reconstruct and clean up the mess.

Hicks was driving the pickup.

"He said he went for coffee with his friend," said Bill Hicks, the victim's father. "He was right here almost by our house and I guess the car came out of nowhere."

Hick's father says he was close with his son, who did marketing work for Camelback Mountain.

"Loved skiing, loved cars, motorcycles, anything outside with the cold weather."

Roberts was driving the Jeep and had three passengers inside.

Ryan Koch says he graduated from Pleasant Valley with Roberts in 2013 and saw him just hours before the crash at a Wawa store.

"I saw him. He walked inside. I gave him a handshake and that was the last I saw him," Koch recalled.

Friends and family tell Newswatch 16 Roberts was a hard worker and sold timeshares with his father. He loved music, outdoors, and had a big heart.

"I can only just imagine what his family's going through right now," Koch added.

Rosenberg was a passenger and didn't survive.

Two others -- Brian Mathious and Joshua Mann -- were rushed to the hospital.

State police say seeing so many young lives lost in a wreck like this is tragic.

"I can't speak to the mindset of people why they choose to travel like that, but here's something where three innocent lives, something could have been prevented," said Trooper Peters.
