FACTORYVILLE -- After four years of hurdles, construction crews are finally getting ready to start work on a new fire station in Wyoming County.

The Factoryville Fire Company recently approved a bid for construction for a new station. Now, firefighters hope it's just a matter of days before they break ground on what they call "a long overdue project."

"This building was built for firetrucks in the 1950s and 1960s," said Second Lieutenant Kyle Stanton.

"We have to have our trucks specially built for this building and literally have to pull out on the apron to have our members get inside of it," said Gerard Welby, president of the Factoryville Fire Company.

Right now in the current fire station, it's a matter of inches between support beams and the fire trucks, which can make getting in and out quite difficult and even lead to some accidents.

Construction crews are expected to break ground any day on the new $2 million station, less than a mile down the road in Clinton Township.

Which means firefighters like Stanton won't have to crawl across seats to get in the firetrucks or worry about breaking a rearview mirror when he's backing in a truck.

"It'll be nice to get some big garage doors, some room and some updated amenities," he added.

"I think it will be a good thing for the town," added Nancy McGuire. "We've been promised for a long time."

Welby hopes to see the new station up and running sometime between the end of this year and next March.

In the meantime, the station will be having plenty of fundraisers to help pay for the project on top of taxpayer money.

The fire department will host "Easter with the Bunny" at Gin's Tavern in Factoryville on March 20 from 8:30 a.m. - 11:30 a.m.
