WILKES-BARRE -- A new restaurant in Wilkes-Barre wants to slice out hunger with pizza.

Dino's Pizza Express opened less than two months ago, but has already donated a thousand slices of pizza to local charities.

Customers who walk into Dino's Pizza Express are not just asked what they'd like to eat. The cashier also wants to know if they would donate 99 cents to its “Slice Out Hunger” campaign. For every donation, Dino's gives a slice of cheese pizza to a local charity.

"Every time I ask, they pretty much donate,” said cashier Rebecca Shaffer.

Dino's Pizza Express reached 1,000 pizza slice donations this week in the two months the shop has opened on South Main Street in downtown Wilkes-Barre.

The pizza shop owner hopes more customers fork over some dough for the cause.

"A lot of these shelters, they don't buy pizza and it's kind of a treat for them,” said owner Dominic Buonsante.

Many charities having a tough time making ends meet say they appreciate the extra help.

"For a small local business to really notice what's going on in the community, it shows a lot to the ladies that are staying here,” said Ruth’s House director Jackie Tona. “I feel like often our homeless population thinks they're often forgotten about or kicked to the curb, but with a gesture like that, it means a lot."

"I couldn't have done it without the generosity of our customers,” said Buonsante.  “It's not me. It's just my idea, but they're the ones who donate the dollars."

Dino's is also open late, until 3 a.m. on Saturdays and Sundays.
