SCRANTON -- Marchers and spectators were treated to warm temperatures and sunshine for Scranton's St. Patrick's Parade.

Like an emerald in the sun, the Scranton St. Patrick's parade sparkled as it made its way through downtown.

No umbrellas were needed this year, but parasols popped up.

The warm weather lifted spirits and gave folks a chance to show off their greenery.

"I got a new hat this year because I love fedoras, and in honor of Dr. Who I can do the bow tie," laughed Janeen Bates of Factoryville.

The parade celebrates Irish color and culture.

9-year-old Madison Day of Harding made her Electric City debut with the Emerald Isle Step Dancers.

"There is just a lot of people to wave to and smile at and make happy," Day said.

For Lackawanna County locals, it's a great get together.

The Grebb family knows how to do things right with a trailer and dozens of family and friends. Planning this party takes six weeks.

"My wedding took longer, but this is very enjoyable," said Marissa Grebb of Old Forge.

Out of towners love it too. Douglas McCloe traveled all the way from Elmira, New York even though he just had knee surgery.

"The people are great. Everybody is 'How you doing?' Everybody is Irish today and that is a good thing," McCloe said.

Some lovely lasses in Civil War era costumes came from Connecticut and the Philadelphia area. Their group looks forward to this parade all year.

"People come up and talk and ask questions. It is truly interactive with the public and that is unique for a parade," explained Laurel Lipschutz, Confederation of Union Generals.

Whether you are a spectator or part of the spectacle, it's hard to beat the combination of Scranton, shamrocks, and smiles.
