SMITHFIELD TOWNSHIP -- Sunny blue skies and extra-warm temperatures this week have the snow at Shawnee Mountain Ski Area melting away.

"We saw that coming so we made snow which is pretty late for us. All last week every night that was below 32, right up through Saturday night we did fire up the snow guns," said Shawnee Mountain's Jim Tust.

The slopes near Marshalls Creek have a good base, enough to keep almost every slope open.

Robin Vogel says this is her last day hopping on a lift.

"It's wonderful not to be cold. It really is. I love it!"

Tourism officials say it's no secret; warm weather has been hard on many of the ski resorts.

"A lot of resorts are hoping to stay open through at least Easter, so the end of March, so it kind of all depends on what Mother Nature has in store for us at this point," said Elizabeth Richardson, Pocono Mountains Visitors Bureau.

Alpine Mountain near Canadensis filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy just last month. It owes PPL Electric more than $200,000.

The lack of snow made skiers hard to come by. In an effort to save some cash, Shawnee Mountain Ski Area has closed some of its ski lifts and is now limiting snow tubing to just weekends.

But the sun didn't stop a father and son team from skiing.

"This is great. This is part of the reason we chose today is because of the warm weather we knew we wouldn't be freezing our fingers off," said New Jersey resident Mike Monroe.

Officials at Shawnee say these conditions are actually perfect for beginners, learning the ropes, and they're hopeful there's still some business left this season.

"We're hopeful that there's still some pent up demand from the late start and that we can have a good March," said Tust.
