SUNBURY -- A massive online fundraising campaign to help nearly 300 nonprofits in central Pennsylvania kicks off Wednesday night.

"Raise the Region" begins at 6 p.m. Wednesday.

We spoke with some nonprofits in Sunbury to see how they will benefit from the online fundraising.

The Greater Susquehanna Valley YMCA is a place for people of all ages to work out, hang out, and chill out. The "Y" is one of the groups benefiting from "Raise the Region," a massive online fundraiser that benefits nearly 300 nonprofits in central Pennsylvania.

The event is organized by the First Community Foundation Partnership of Pennsylvania.

The money donated to the "Y" will go towards its scholarship program.

"That program will provide assistance to families who want to join the YMCA but don't have the means to do so. We have a daycare program and many other youth programs that families need those services but can't necessarily afford," said Wayne Stump, Greater Susquehanna Valley YMCA.

The Greater Susquehanna Valley United Way plans to use its money from "Raise the Region" to fund a brand new program called, "ABL: A Better Life."

"The program is aimed at helping families who are struggling to survive, living in poverty but don't want to live like that anymore," said Joanne Troutman, Greater Susquehanna Valley United Way.

Troutman says this program goes beyond public assistance.

"A lot of times public assistance provides for immediate needs and that's all. This will provide someone with a long-term plan."

Another organization in Sunbury that will benefit from "Raise the Region" is Central Susquehanna Sight Services. The nonprofit provides vision screenings and helps people who are blind. The donations will help its clients.

"(It) will help out with those transportation needs and help out with the support services, the reading and the bill paying and those kinds of things," said Shelly Stroble, Central Susquehanna Sight Services.

"Raise the Region" continues until Thursday night at midnight. Blaise Alexander Family Dealerships will stretch the money further with an additional donation.
