JIM THORPE -- Police in Jim Thorpe believe a man broke into a home and stole two atlases.

An atlas is a collection of maps.

Officers say the man broke into the place along West Broadway around 9 p.m. Sunday and stole the two books worth about $10,000.

"When the homeowner explained to me what the atlases were and the history behind them, someone actually, I feel, knew what they were taking," said Jim Thorpe Police Det. Lee Marzen.

The owner of this mansion, which is often rented out to visitors, sent us a picture of an atlas the thief left behind.

It's of Queens, New York, from 1927. It's slightly less valuable than the two stolen atlases. They date back to the 1800s and map out Brooklyn and Manhattan.

"The individual actually tried to take all three books and I guess he had to put the one book down and fled the residence as the alarm was going off inside the house."

Police believe the burglar ripped a screen off a back window, went through the house for about an hour, eventually stealing the two atlases and walking right out the front door.

Walter Whitehead lives across the street from the mansion that was burglarized. He says he was sitting outside like he usually does around the time of the burglary.

"We didn't hear nothing, see nothing. That's what gets me. I'm out here smoking cigarettes because we don't smoke in the house and I'm totally amazed," said Whitehead.
