LEHMAN TOWNSHIP -- Campus security and barricades were posted at each entrance to Penn State Wilkes-Barre after a bomb threat prompted school officials to evacuate the campus.

The threat came in around 1:30 p.m. Thursday, according to school officials. Within the hour, students, faculty, and staff had been cleared out.

“We were getting ready for class, and everybody got the text messages. We just all went crazy,” said junior Greg Strazdus.

School officials won't say how the threat was made.

Strazdus says based on text alerts the college sent out, he believes it may have something to do with the science building.

“The first text said that the science building was closed, and 24 minutes later the second text said that the whole campus was to be evacuated,” said Strazdus.

Classes on Thursday and Friday are cancelled, and the campus is closed until Saturday morning. School officials were told the bomb could go off at any time through noon Friday.

“We currently have state police here with their bomb sniffing dogs. They are sweeping the campus,” said Rachael Rybicki, a campus spokesperson. “We do not know any other information beyond that. The campus will be closed through Saturday morning.”

Doreen Johnson was walking the campus perimeter with a friend when she found out about the threat.

“Just kind of noticed the sign that said campus closed and realized that something was happening but we had no idea,” said Johnson. “It is scary so close to home, you know. It definitely is scary, and it's happening in so many other places, and here it is right here in our backyard,” said Johnson.
