LACKAWAXEN TOWNSHIP -- A teenager is behind bars in Pike County after allegedly opening fire on two people in a car late Saturday night.

Shawn Vannatta, 18, of Honesdale had nothing to say as troopers led him out of the Blooming Grove state police barracks and took him to the Pike County jail.

He faces several charges including attempted homicide. He is accused to trying to kill a 16-year-old boy and his father after he allegedly fired shots into their SUV late Saturday night in the parking lot of the market at Woodloch on Route 590 near Hawley.

According to investigators, the two teens were meeting to fight after they weren't getting along for months. That's when Vannatta allegedly hit the teen with a handgun, then fired several shots into the SUV driven by the teen's father who showed up to stop it all.

That father told investigators it was Vannatta's grandmother who handed him the gun in the parking lot.

No one was seriously hurt and it's not clear at this time who the gun belongs to, Vannatta or someone else.

Troopers arrested Vannatta Sunday morning at his home in Honesdale.

Many people we spoke with say they moved to the area to get away from crime, so they were plenty surprised to hear what happened.

"I would describe this as very quiet. I originally come from the city and I moved up here so my children would be in a quiet, peaceful area, so to hear this is a little puzzling," said Lisa Basilicata of Hawley.

"It's usually quiet. You don't hear really anything like that going on, shootings or anything," Donna DeGroat of Hawley said.

"Probably an isolated incident, but makes you think you could be driving by and get hit. You never know," said Robert Gitto of Lackawaxen Township.

Vannatta is locked up in the Pike County jail while he awaits a preliminary hearing.
