EXETER -- A vacant apartment caught fire on Schooley Avenue in Exeter Saturday evening, prompting fire crews from all over to join in to help contain the flames.
"There was a blaze of smoke coming out so we ran out," said neighbor Daniel Fernandez. "As soon as I got to the corner, I saw the house was on fire."
According to the Exeter fire chief, the flames started behind in a shed, before spreading up the back of the apartment building.
In the unit next to it all, Cynthia Marstell will have to find somewhere else to stay after crews had to put a hole in her roof to help with the smoke.
"I moved in on Thursday, got done unpacking the U-Haul on Friday and look where we are," said Marstell. "[The firefighters] got here very promptly. Within maybe four minutes, they were here."
"For the extent of the fire once we arrived here, it was a quick knockdown," said Chief Donald Skursky of Exeter Borough Fire.
The American Red Cross is assisting four people displaced by the fire.
Skursky said an investigation is ongoing and there's no official cause just yet of how it all started.
