STROUD TOWNSHIP -- A winter weather advisory has been issued for our area through Wednesday morning.

Parts of the region could see a combination of snow, ice, and freezing rain.

Travel quickly became a challenge in the Poconos Tuesday afternoon.

In Bartonsville, 36 PennDOT trucks loaded up, ready to spread salt, preparing for a wintry mix of snow, freezing rain, and rain.

“We were spraying salt brine this morning, in our dark hours. We've had crews in since 4 o'clock this morning and we've been spraying up to this point,” said PennDOT’s Monroe County maintenance manager Jay Borger.

Stroudsburg Area School District began dismissing students early, around 12:30 p.m., along with many other districts in northeastern and central Pennsylvania.

Meanwhile other drivers were trying to beat the bad weather and head into work early.

"Even though I have a 4x4 car, it's just horrible in the snow. It's really bad. I'm not really a snow driver at all,” said Heba Elsayad of Stroudsburg.

Road conditions quickly got worse in Stroud Township along Bangor Mountain Road, near the Northampton County line.

Car after car was stranded on the steep road. Many drivers were spinning out, unable to get traction.

"I started sliding and I was going really slow. I tried to turn around but then I couldn't get back up the hill either,” said Patricia Pierre of Tannersville.

Pierre ended up stranded on her way home from a Zumba class.

Police tried to help drivers who were stuck, while PennDOT worked to spread salt.

“What Mother Nature brings on top of that mountain compared to here in Stroudsburg are two different worlds,” said Borger.

Snow turned to rain here by mid-afternoon. PennDOT officials say now that it’s getting dark, drivers should be on the lookout for black ice.
