HAZLETON -- In an effort to improve access to the police in Luzerne County, a wall has come down in Hazleton.

The wall blocking off the window to the Hazleton Police Department was removed by Mayor Jeff Cusat inside city hall.

In the past, people needing to speak with an officer would have to call from a phone installed outside the department and wait for one to arrive.

Now, the interim police chief says people will now get to speak to a real officer behind the glass partition, 24 hours a day.

"This will give somebody the ability to walk through that door, meet with somebody live and be able to have a police officer in a matter of minutes so this is really good for the community," said acting Hazleton Police Chief Jerry Speziale.

Officials in Hazleton say cadets from the police program at Lackawanna College will help behind the window.
