DREHER TOWNSHIP -- We've all experienced long wait times at the doctor's office, but one elementary school student in Wayne County is trying to give young patients something to do.

9-year-old Jordyn Fontano was inspired after a book report to help collect books for kids to read while they're at the hospital.

"They'll have stuff to do and they won't be bored and at least make it a little bit better," said Fontano.

So far, Jordyn has collected more than 200 books, which will go to the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia.

It may seem an unusual out-of-town choice for the books until you realize her best friend, Kyla, has to go to Philadelphia once a month to meet with doctors.

"It means a lot to me," said Kyla Story. "I don't think I've ever had anyone do that for the hospital I go to."

"It's all those things we try to instill beyond math and language arts: the human side," said Mark Kirsten, principal at Wallenpaupack South Elementary.

"I'm learning from her as much as she's learning from me," said Jill Fontano, Jordyn's mother. "I've always said since Jordyn was little, she's the kind of person I want to be when I grow up."

You can donate new or gently used books to Wallenpaupack South Elementary for the next month.
