According to the National Retail Federation, the typical fan spends more than $80 for Super Bowl Sunday on food and other items.

In our area, some fire companies and other charities use the day for fundraising, with food as the star attraction.

In Throop, Rescue 27 has held a "Wing Fest" for the past 10 years.

The event keeps growing. Back in 2006, 400 pounds of chicken wings were sold, now the total is close to 1500 pounds.

This year, the money will pay for gear needed for a new fire truck on the way.

Chief Andy Hegedus said, "It should be here any day and we are excited about adding tools and just getting it in service for the residents and businesses of the borough of Throop."

He adds that since the price of chicken has cut into profits, the department now sells merchandise such as shirts at the event.

In Wilkes-Barre, a backyard on Westminster Street filled with clouds of fragrant smoke. The Wilkes-Barre branch of the NAACP has made a tradition out of selling racks of ribs on Super Sunday.

Money raised here helps pay administrative costs, and funds for civil rights programs, which now include working with a new youth chapter.

President Larry Singleton said, "Acclimating them and training them and nurturing them to take on the cause."

Expert grill masters soak the meat in a marinade for 24 hours before it goes on the smoker. Hungry fans come from across the city and beyond.

Kim Shedlock of Laurel Run said, "I love these ribs so much that I tell everyone I know to come and get these ribs because they are the best."
