WAYNE COUNTY -- A 12-year-old girl had to be rescued after falling through some ice in Wayne County.

State police said the girl from Honesdale went through the ice on Lake Cadjaw on Thursday.

"It was just so scary," said Marcie Bunting. "I threw everything down, come running down and called 911 and screaming for my husband to come down out of the barn."

Marcie Bunting and her husband Jerry run Billy's New Hope Farm near Honesdale. They devote their lives to rescuing animals, but their latest rescue was that 12-year-old girl.

According to Bunting, three girls were playing near the ice of Lake Cadjaw, when two fell in. One of two girls managed to crawl out on her own and ran for help. That's when the Buntings jumped into action, first with a ladder and when that didn't work, they went to the row boat.

"There was a row boat here but the oars were put away for the winter so I had to find oars and run to him and thank God [my husband] got out there quick enough and was able to get her into the boat," Marcie Bunting added. "She just clung on and she told him that he was her hero."

According to state police, the ice on the lake was only about two inches thick.

"Usually, when you're out on ice, they recommend make sure you have at least six inches of ice," said Honesdale Fire Chief Steven Bates.  "Risking their own lives to go out there and save other people's lives. We commended [the Buntings] really well. Not a lot of individuals will do that."

Authorities tell Newswatch16 the girl is recovering at a nearby hospital.
