POTTSVILLE -- The snow just kept coming all Saturday afternoon in Pottsville. 17 inches of snow had fallen by 1 p.m. This meant folks trying to dig out their cars and sidewalks did not catch a break.
On Pottsville's steep streets, the driving was treacherous. So many folks decided to hoof it or just stay home.
On South 14th Street, the piles of precipitation left resident Bill Hoak with a broken snow thrower.
"Now that your snow thrower's busted what are you gonna do? Manual labor," laughs Hoak.
While he's braving the storm with just a shovel, he is not giving up.
"Some of the neighbors on the block are elderly, so I will try and dig out some of their cars to help them out."
With customers in short supply at the Tex Mex Diner on Market Street, Tex Mex employee Elliot Dean donned a sombrero and waded into the drifts.
"If they would like to take a break and get warm, they can come have a cup of coffee and a couple of tacos," said Dean.
"You know what? This was the first one of the year, and it's fun to be out in it," added Dave Loftus of Mahanoy City. "I'm off for the day."
Mahanoy City was one of the several communities that ordered vehicles to stay off the roads unless they needed to go somewhere. Everyone did not comply.
"There are cars driving up and down the street," said Humane Fire Company's Jeff Miller. "They might as well stay home so we don't get any calls for accidents and stuff like that."
For kids, the snowfall meant a chance to sled or even make a few bucks. We met a trio of teens on Centre Street looking to put their shovels to work.
"Sometimes people are a little annoyed like 'No I'll do it later'," said Vinnie McEntee of Mahanoy City. "For the most part, people are like 'Oh yeah, thank you.' "
Since it's the weekend and most people don't have to work, some folks are having fun with the snow. There were a few snowmobiles zipping along the streets in downtown Pottsville.
