SCRANTON -- The Martin Luther King Jr. holiday isn't just a day of service, it's also a busy day and holiday weekend for ski resorts.

It may only have been in the teens with wind chills near zero, but there were plenty of people on the slopes at Montage Mountain on Martin Luther King Jr. Day. The resort in Scranton has been open for just a few weeks, and skiers and snowboarders are happy to be back on the snow.

"Whenever I can get out, I try to get out," said Carol Krawetz of Clarks Summit. "Conditions are good. This is great for us skiers, finally we got it!"

Monday was the first holiday weekend this season for skiers and snowboarders to hit the slopes in Scranton. Up until now it has been a battle with Mother Nature's unseasonably warm temperatures.

Mary Jo Granahan and her friends say the wait has been a long one, but it was well worth the wait.

"Well, at Christmas when you're walking around at 70 degrees and like, 'are we ever going to ski?' But now that it's cold and they can make snow every night, it's nice," Granahan said.

With cold temperatures in the forecast all week, workers at Montage Mountain say they plan to make plenty of snow for as long as they can.

Montage Mountain had 13 trails open on Monday.

Tyler Crawford says as long as the cold weather sticks around, skiers and riders can expect more trails to open, and soon enough, snow tubing.

"Snow making around the clock, absolutely, we should have snow tubing here within the next week or two finally. You should expect to see the rest of the trails open here in the near future," said Crawford.
