SCRANTON -- The man suspected of robbing a bank in Scranton Thursday afternoon has been caught.
Police responded to reports of a bank robbery at the NBT Bank on Meadow Avenuein Scranton around 2 p.m.
Scranton police identified the suspect in the robbery as Chayse Filler, 22, originally from the Harrisburg area.
Just after 11 p.m. Thursday, Susquehanna Township police in Dauphin County found Filler hiding in a hotel. According to Scranton police, Filler admitted to robbing the bank, blaming it on his drug addiction.
Authorities released security camera images from the robbery, including a photo of a white vehicle that police believe may be involved.
"It's nuts with all the cops I've seen out there coming out with assault rifles and everything," said Mark Centeno, who works at the Jiffy Lube right across the street.
Centeno became an NBT customer not more than two weeks ago.
"On a main road like this and in broad daylight with so many people out; I don't know who in their right mind thinks of doing something like that. Maybe they've seen too many movies."
This isn't the first time NBT Bank has dealt with a robbery.
Over the past six weeks, three NBT Banks were robbed in our area, including one in Elmhurst on December 1 and another on Main Street in Newfoundland just before Christmas.
State police have not arrested anyone in the other robberies yet and at this time, Scranton police believe Thursday's robbery is not connected to the others.
Regardless, people like Joseph Matthews realize this kind of thing just needs to stop.
"You didn't have all this 10 or 15 years ago," said Matthews. "There was a lot more stability and people had jobs and people had a little more respect for one another and now, we're losing it across the board."
Giving areas like where the NBT Bank in Scranton is located a bad name.
"I'll watch my back," said Susan Popeck of Scranton. "[I'll] be watching where I'm going and who is around me because I thought this area was safe."
Scranton police said Filler will be arraigned and held in the Dauphin County prison until arrangements are made to bring him back to Scranton.
If you have any information about any of the other robberies, you're asked to call police.
