SHICKSHINNY-- It's a tradition five years strong in Shickshinny. People as young as 7 and as old as 76 plunge into ice-cold water.
"To support this beautiful family, the Mott family. The young Mott boys are what encouraged me to do it," said 76-year-old Jim Meeker of Shickshinny.
Money raised at this polar plunge usually goes to a charity organization, like Give Kids The World.
"Today is different. Because of the local tragedy we had, we decided that we were going to donate it all to Rachel Mott and her family who lost everything in a fire," said Laura Shaffer, who helped organize the annual polar plunge.
Back in December, with just three weeks before Christmas, the Mott family not only lost their home in Huntington Township, but they lost a loved one. They lost 38-year-old Mason Mott.
Mason was a husband and the father of three young boys. His sons attended the polar plunge in Shickshinny, two even jumped in.
"It's unreal the amount of support, because they are starting from scratch. The house is a shell, which we hope to rectify that in the next couple of weeks," said Betsy Mott, Mason's mother.
One woman alone, who is terrified of water, raised $1,600 in pledges to take part in the plunge.
All together, more than $4,000 was raised to help a family in need.
