SCRANTON -- It won't be long before the ball drops into the new year and people all over are preparing to celebrate 2016. Including here at The Mall at Steamtown.
"We're going to be doing another walk through and making sure we have so many events that we are going to have located throughout," said Amy Zellers, The Mall at Steamtown Marketing Director.
The mall in downtown Scranton is one of many places throughout the city taking place in "First Night." A family fun event that brings people throughout Lackawanna County together to ring in the new year.
"Since I've been here there hasn't been anything really much to do so to have a big thing at the mall. I think it's cool," said Olivia Lopez, Scranton.
Here at the mall, plenty of activities are being put in place.
This year's theme, "Past, Present and Future."
"This year more than ever we are seeing those families come back again and we know they will be here for first night," said Zellers.
With the mall under new ownership, organizers tell us it's a good way to remember all the celebrations past but look forward to the future.
People shopping around the mall agree.
"Remembering the past for all the good, the hard times, the good time and the bad but looking forward to the future and progressing and coming together as a whole," Karissa Worobey, Scranton.
With all the open mall space, organizers want to make sure they have enough planned for the whole family to enjoy. They tell us not only will there be activities on the first floor but also the second floor.
"You get to spend time together and everybody is together having a good time," said Lopez.
"It's very important to have family events to bring everyone together and celebrate as a family," said Worobey.

First night events kick off in Downtown Scranton on Thursday at 3 p.m..
