SMITHFIELD TOWNSHIP -- Shawnee Mountain in Monroe County had just enough snow to open on Monday, but with warmer weather on the way, can it stay open through Christmas week?

It's opening day for Shawnee Mountain Ski Area near Marshalls Creek, but there's still more grass than snow showing, limiting the number of open slopes to just one.

"It's always exciting even with as limiting as it is," said Jim Tust, Shawnee Mountain Ski Area. "We were able the last three nights to make some snow and got about a foot of snow here on the beginner's slope."

Ashley Heien from North Carolina says it's not a letdown at all, because most ski areas along the east coast haven't even turned on their lifts.

"No, because there's like nothing open, you know, up through Canada. We looked at it because we were going to just keep driving," Heien said.

Shawnee did blow snow on six other trails, but it's not deep enough or wide enough just yet.

Heien says the bunny hill is just her speed.

"It's my first time snowboarding so it's perfect . It's great, and it's still a little bit too big for me."

Even though one ski lift is open at Shawnee, there's no guarantees for skiers through the rest of the week.

"At least we got today and things can change on the weather; we all know that, so we'll go as far as we can and at least we have a base. It won't all melt out even if it goes to 65 degrees," said Tust.

In the meantime, 2-year-old Peyton from Florida is enjoying her first look at snow while her older sisters take ski lessons.

"She likes it. She wants to play in it, but you can't really make any snowmen yet," said Florida resident Amanda Wilson.

Some others are hoping more snow falls soon.

"I wish some other stuff was open but it's alright, better than nothing," said Chase Heien.

Skiers can call Shawnee or check online for condition updates.
