EAST STROUDSBURG -- It was a big day for the Salvation Army in Monroe County as Santa and his helpers started handing out mountains of gifts donated to help needy families.

This year, Kesha Ricks needs a hand to make sure her two sons have Christmas gifts. The Salvation Army in East Stroudsburg is making her wish come true.

"You would think there is nobody out here that would help, but there are plenty of people that come out and just help, and it's just it's heartwarming," Ricks said.

This is the day staff here looks forward to when they can start handing out the piles of presents individuals and groups have donated.

"All of these kids are going to be taken care of for Christmas," said Salvation Army Major James Gingrich. "They will wake up Christmas morning surprised by all these presents. To feel like you had a part in that, it's just very special."

Plenty of volunteers were on hand to help parents pick though the choices including stocking stuffers, school supplies, and clothing.

"I've seen plenty of people grab things and they are like, 'Oh, my God, this is perfect. This is what I need.' It's just… It's great, it's great," said Kaitlyn Curran of Cresco.

Organizers say the event isn't just about getting people toys. It's about creating an atmosphere that really celebrates the holiday.

The gift giveaway continues through Wednesday and donations are still being accepted; things for teens are always in short supply.

Ricks says people facing tough times shouldn't be ashamed to ask for help.

"Hold up your pride, pull yourself together, and you come out, and there are things that you can get help with."

It's help that's filling her cart and her heart with holiday joy.
