HAZLETON -- People who use a parking garage on South Wyoming Street in Hazleton can finally park in peace.

After more than a year of work and more than $1 million, it's finally a smooth ride around the garage.

Before it looked new, it was in desperate need of some renovations. The garage would leak and some people say it was common to find chunks of concrete on your car.

"Cracked concrete decking, deteriorating concrete decking, there were holes in the deck," said Dominic Yannuzzi, the contractor for the project.

Even the fire alarms didn't work. Those were also replaced.

"It wasn't maintained. It wasn't repaired properly and this is why it cost $1.75 million," Hazleton Mayor Joe Yannuzzi said.

The contractor says about 95 percent of those leaks are fixed. He said the key to keeping this place looking the way it does now is maintenance, every year.

"It's refurbished back to what it was intended to do."

The garage has 215 parking spots.

One belongs to Diana Morris-Smaglik, who has parked in the garage for a few years through the good and bad.

"I spent many a night writing letters saying, 'Hey you're destroying my car and I'm paying for you to destroy my car," said Morris-Smaglik.

She says the new lighting at the place makes her feel more comfortable.

"It gives me an opportunity to go in and feel safe if I'm there in the evening or early in the morning when I come in."

Mayor Yannuzzi says there will likely be a rate increase voted on this week.

It would bring the cost from about $44 to $50 a month.
