WILKES-BARRE TOWNSHIP -- A mother is under arrest in Luzerne County after police said she tried to kill herself and her children in a car.

Police said just after 5 p.m. Wednesday, Melissa Scholl put her two kids in the back of her car and parked between two school buses at Student Transportation of America bus depot along Blackman Street near Wilkes-Barre.

A bus driver pulled into the depot only because a group he was supposed to pick up never showed up. That driver stumbled on Scholl, her 7-year-old son, and 5-year-old daughter inside the car with the windows rolled up. A hose was connected to the tailpipe and the other end was inside the car.

Police say Scholl was trying to poison herself and the kids.

The bus driver, Robert Shinal, knows Scholl and her kids well.

"Kids I drive every day. I just wanted to get the hose out and get her keys and make sure the kids were safe," he said.

Before police arrived on scene, Scholl gave Shinal a hint at why she may have tried to end her children's lives.

"She said it was tough raising two kids on her own with no child support, that she has been doing it since the kids were born," Shinal said.

The children were taken to the hospital and are expected to be OK.

Scholl was arraigned on two counts of attempted homicide.
