NANTICOKE -- Police found drugs on a driver who crashed into the patio area of a bar in Luzerne County.

That car slammed into the front patio railing of Tommyboy's Bar and Grill on Broadway Street in Nanticoke around 6 a.m. on Thursday.

It's the third crash at the place in about a year.

Tommyboy's Bar and Grill on Broadway Street is dealing with tens of thousands of dollars in damages after all these crashes.

Back in October, an SUV went through this part of the building.

They were still in the process of repairing that damage when another car drove through the bar's patio Thursday morning.

The owner of Tommyboy's Bar and Grill in Nanticoke got a call that was all too familiar. A car crashed into the bar on Broadway Street for the third time in about a year.

In the latest crash, the driver admitted to falling asleep at the wheel and police found heroin in the car.

In another crash two months ago, police say the driver was drunk.

And late last year, a driver had a medical issue.

In addition to those crashes that damaged Tommyboy's, several cars parked outside have been hit by people driving down Broadway Street.

"It's heart-breaking. I'm here six years. We've never had this problem. Why is it happening all of a sudden?

The owner of Tommyboy's doesn't know for sure what is causing these crashes, but thinks it has something to do with the lines that were painted on this road a few months ago.

"They put these stripes, these lines on the road, and there is no parking across the street," said owner Adeline Smith. "There is parking on this side, but yet that side is wider."

Nanticoke city officials now admit they are concerned and plan to request a PennDOT traffic study on Broadway Street to figure out what's causing so many of the crashes.

"I've met with the mayor and we are going to talk with Senator Yudichak to see what he can do for us, maybe, about lowering the speed limit, looking at the roadway," said Nanticoke Police Chief William Schultz.

"Obviously there is a problem there," said Nanticoke City Manager Andrew Gegaris. "And we are committed to do whatever we can to protect the businesses and the residents within our city."

Tommyboys' owner hopes things can get figured out before it takes a toll on her business and before someone gets badly hurt.

"I don't want it to turn my patrons off from coming here. This is my business. I work hard at this bar," Smith said.

The owner of Tommyboy's wants people to know that her bar is still open.

Nanticoke city officials plan to meet with state officials next week to discuss a traffic study on this street.
