PITTSTON -- This was a day of giving back for a group of high school students in Luzerne County.
Sophomore students from Holy Cross High School in Dunmore are trying to warm hearts this holiday season by collecting warm coats—as well as other winter clothes. They're gathering the gently used coats at the old Seton Catholic High School auditorium in Pittston. Later this month, the clothes will be distributed to families in need.
"I look forward to helping people all the time. It really makes me happy to help those who are less fortunate than I am,” Mollie Burda of Holy Cross.
Peggy Burke coordinates the Christmas Coat Giveaway with help from Care and Concern Ministries.
“It was a tremendous help for us today. They had big jobs and got a lot done,” she said.
So far about 300 coats have been collected, but they need about double that amount to fulfill just some of the needs here in the Wyoming Valley.
“Some of these people are thrilled to get a gently used coat. It's a tremendous day and they're very appreciative,” Burke said.
Donations can be made at the parish center on Church Street in Pittston until December 14. The coat giveaway is December 16.
