SCRANTON -- Fire broke out in an apartment building in Scranton Monday afternoon.
It started around 2 p.m. in the place in the 900 block of Capouse Avenue.
"It was brown smoke like now, and then all of a sudden it got bad. Flames started shooting through,” said Bob Bocaski of Scranton.
Fire crews said when they arrived, flames were coming from the rear of that apartment building on the corner of Capouse Avenue and Green Place, then those flames quickly spread to the property next door, which houses a printing business, Third Dimension Graphics. In all, 901, 903, 905, 907 Capouse Avenue were all destroyed, the shared roof collapsed.
Fire officials said no one was seriously injured. PPL crews were called in to cut power to the buildings.
Many people said they saw the smoke from miles away and came to see what was happening.
"I saw it start and at first I thought it was a train and then I noticed it was huge so when I noticed a big plume of smoke that's when I noticed there was a fire and I went to go check it out,” said Jacob Ragnacci of Scranton.
Part of Capouse Avenue was closed to traffic because of the fire.
Red Cross officials are helping three people who lost their apartments in the blaze.
Folks from the printing business carted out what they could from the business.
"My friend lives in the third house and his business is down there. I feel sorry for him. I'll help him if he needs it, but I just, whenever there's a fire, it's a bad thing,” said Richard Jones of Scranton.
