HARMONY TOWNSHIP -- Rifle deer season began Monday morning in Pennsylvania.
This year, the Pennsylvania Game Commission asked hunters to utilize their "Deer Hunter Focus Areas," and from what was seen today, hunters are embracing it.
Carlos Cuevis of Susquehanna Township is happy with his first day of rifle deer season. It only took him a couple of hours to nab a buck.
Along with family and friends, Cuevis made his way to the game lands in Susquehanna County, one of many scattered across our area now with sections labeled "Deer Hunter Focus Areas."
Inside the deer hunter focus areas, you'll notice a lot of trees and brush cleared out because the Game Commission wants new vegetation to grow. So, that's why they are asking the hunters for help.
"We don't normally hunt here," said Al Cuevis of Susquehanna Township. "We're a member of a gun club so we normally hunt at the gun club. But we decided we'd come up here to check this out because of what they did up here and we thought this was a much better area to come hunt today."
At some gamelands, new access roads were put in to help draw in more hunters to these desired areas.
"It's nice when you have kids and we can drive up into it at least instead of walking that far because that's a hard walk with a deer," said Frank Leady of Perkasie.
"The deer just loaded up here in the game lands so there's nowhere for them to go and people go in and I think there needs to be more focus areas in these parts of the woods," Carlos Cuevis added.
