LACKAWANNA COUNTY -- Some folks in Lackawanna County spent their post dinner time relaxing on the couch, but for bargain hunters it was time to shop as many stores kick off Black Friday on Thanksgiving.

But some stores are staying closed this year, keeping this holiday an actual holiday.

The first customers coming through the doors at Toy's R U were greeted with applause from the eager staff, ready to welcome them into the controlled chaos.

“I came here for Black Friday shopping,” said 6-year-old Chase Wilbert.

Black Friday isn't reserved to Friday anymore with the toy store and other retailers opening their doors on Thanksgiving.

People here were gobbling up the bargains.

“It's a really good deal actually,” said Brian Pallman from Factoryville. “80 percent off the second one, it's two for 18 bucks.”

“This is a great deal because you figure the smaller figures, 5-inch, 6-inch, they're like 7, 8, 9 dollars, and you get the whole set for $29.99, 18-inch figures,” said Joan Super from Dickson City.

At Best Buy, the line stretched around the building as people waited for the doors to open.

“Oh we're crazy, we're crazy, I was about 27 degrees I think,” said Nick Lepre who camped out over night with friend RJ Andrewsh.

“Oh I was absolutely freezing, I had about 4 blankets on, bundled up, face covered and yeah, that still didn't help,” said Andrewsh.

But it's all worth it for the door buster.

“49-inch Toshiba for a $149, that's what everybody's waiting for,” said Charlene Bedford from Dickson City.

But some retailers, including Home Depot, are taking a stand against Black Friday mania on Thanksgiving. They're staying closed to allow their employees to spend the holiday with their families.

Other stores following suit included TJ Maxx, Pier One, Game Stop and Joann Fabrics.

But with lines outside Target and the packed parking lot outside JC Penney’s, Black Friday might just be here to stay on turkey day.

“I'm out with family, we already had our turkey dinner earlier today and so I'm just enjoying time with the ladies while the guys are at home watching some football,” said Liz Vohar from Scranton.
