SUNBURY -- Special Occasions on Second Street in Sunbury is filled with volunteers carving hams, folding clothes, and sorting toys to get ready for Sunbury's free community Thanksgiving dinner.

Kim Eisley of West Milton donated a pie.

"I can't believe how many people they feed. It's so good that she does this, that she takes the time out to do this for everyone in the community," Eisley said.

How many people do they feed at this free dinner?

"My first year 97 people. And last year? 787 meals were served," Rhonda Fisher said.

Rhonda Fisher of Beaver Springs has organized this community dinner for 17 years now. It takes her almost a full year to plan it. She's grateful for volunteers, including Ken Moser.

"Help her cook and do stuff and clean up afterwards," Moser said.

Last year, nearly 800 meals were served. Even more are expected this year. And it's not just a dinner. There is a continental breakfast, bingo, door prizes, and a clothing drive.

Russell Carl of Sunbury plans to be there.

"There's a lot of people who don't have a place to go or anything on Thanksgiving, so I think it's a great thing," Carl said.

Something new this year is Rhonda's dinner has a sponsor. Since Weis Markets is based in Sunbury, the company jumped on board to help pay for the dinner.

Weis Markets donated $2,000 to the community dinner and says it will sponsor the event for years to come.

"They helped in a big way this year. I am so grateful to them," Fisher said.

So why does Rhonda sacrifice her own Thanksgiving to organize this dinner?

"We all have something that we can give. We all have something that we can be thankful for. We all are blessed in some way," Fisher said.

The community Thanksgiving dinner starts at 8 a.m. at Special Occasions in Sunbury and everyone is welcome.
