LEHIGHTON -- Out of all the high school football playoff games this weekend, one team in Carbon County had a lot to play for, history.

Not only was the Lehighton Football Team playing for the District 11 Championship, they were also playing the game that would officially close the doors on their 75-year-old stadium.

A Saturday in November can only mean playoff football across northeastern and central Pennsylvania. In this matchup, the undefeated Lehighton Indians are grinding it out with the undefeated Saucon Valley Panthers.

But to many in the stands, and even the mascot, Susan Cook, this is more than just a football game. It's the last one they'll see in Lehighton Stadium.

"It's tough because I've been with these guys all four years," said Cook. "Even though I'm not on the field with them, I still feel everything they feel."

After 75 years, the Indians Football team will move just down the road to a new $6.5 million stadium, next to the high school.

Lehighton Stadium was supposed to close two weeks ago. Since the football team kept on winning, they kept on playing which means fans kept on coming.

"It's like a slow band-aid, it keeps getting ripped off because you don't know when it's going to stop," said Courtney VanFossen, parent. "I hope it goes on for these boys because this is a dream that can live on forever and ever."

Charles Fadden of Lehighton has been coming to these games all his life. So there's mixed feelings in this game more than just those "end of the season" ones.

"It means a lot. There's a lot of memories at this stadium," said Fadden. "They had a lot of good teams but they haven't had one this good in years. But to have this one finish out the history of this field is incredible."

The last time Lehighton won the outright District Championship was in 1987. In this case, the wait will continue in their new home next season. They lost 56-20.
