SMITHFIELD TOWNSHIP -- One person is dead after a crash in Monroe County.
It was early Wednesday morning when four cars crashed on a windy stretch of road near East Stroudsburg. Officials report a 44-year-old husband and father from the East Stroudsburg area was killed on his way to work.
The Monroe County Coroner has confirmed that Guiliano Joseph, 44, of Stroud Township died in that crash.
Investigators say he was hit head on right around 4:30 a.m. when he was on his way to the Martz Bus Station in Delaware Water Gap.
In all, four cars were mangled along River Road.
"You wake up in the morning to go to work, and then that's the last day of your life. It's kind of crazy,” said Cynthia Rivera-Lugo, who works nearby.
Joseph was a husband and father who worked as a bus driver for New York City Metro.
Investigators say another driver, Stephen Martini, 25, of Bushkill, was heading north on River Road when he lost control, side swiped two cars, and then hit Joseph head on.
Officials say Martini was not going the speed limit.
"Notable that the vehicle that was responsible for the accident was going at a very high rate of speed at the time,” said Monroe County Coroner Bob Allen.
Court Records show Martini, who was behind the wheel of this Volkswagen has a criminal past. Currently, he's out on bail waiting to be sentenced on misdemeanor assault charges in Pike County.
River Road was closed for about six hours while investigators reconstructed that crash, but as of right now, there's still a lot of questions that remain unanswered.
Harold McCoy of Maryland wanted to know what happened here when he woke up and saw the commotion outside his vacation rental condo.
"I looked out the window and I saw three or four police cars up on the highway there,” said McCoy.
One worker at nearby Roma Pizza and Restaurant says she avoids River Road at all costs and takes Route 209 as an alternate.
"Actually it's a straighter route on 209 as opposed to taking the River Road, which is so windy and it's so narrow. The roads are really narrow so it's kind of scary,” said Rivera-Lugo.
Investigators haven’t said just how fast Martini was driving or where he was heading to so quickly.
Martini and a male passenger were flown to Lehigh Valley Hospital. The female passenger in their car was taken to Pocono Medical Center and then flown to St. Luke’s Hospital.
State Police have yet to say if drugs or alcohol may have played a factor in this deadly crash.
