WILKES-BARRE -- Wilkes-Barre Mayor-Elect Tony George still has a month and a half before he takes office, but he has promised to cut crime after he's sworn in as the city's new mayor.

Some hope he lives up to his promises, especially after a shooting on Stanton Street over the weekend left one person in the hospital.

George wants to bring back the "mayor's help line" so people can call to report crime or other concerns. Some people we talked to aren't sure the mayor's plans to cut crime will work.

“As far as changing anything, probably not,” said Melissa Lowery of Wilkes-Barre.

“I mean, I guess it might create a job or two, but is it really worth it?” asked Fredrick Mueller of Wilkes-Barre.

Mayor-elect Tony George lives about two blocks away from where this shooting happened on Stanton Street. Newswatch 16 reached out to George for comment. We never heard back.

People who live and work in the city have this advice for George as he prepares to become mayor:

“Good luck, that's about it -- hopefully he can change things,” Lowery said.
