SUSQUEHANNA -- Instead of asking for presents for her birthday, one girl in Susquehanna County is asking for blankets for animals at an area shelter.

Rebecca Haley will turn nine years old on Monday. But instead of presents, she asked her parents for blankets for the animals at True Friends Animal Welfare Center in Montrose.

With the help of social media, she got quite a few blankets.

"Oh my goodness, there's been [blankets] to the floor to our ceiling in our den and there's just been so many on my porch," chuckled Rebecca Haley.

Rebecca's family got their dog, Champ, last year at the shelter. That's when Rebecca noticed all the dogs in their kennels, with many without a blanket to sit on.

"I saw a lot of them shivering on the floor and I wanted to get something for them," added Haley.

"I was taken aback by what she had said and I just went with it," said Chrissie Haley, Rebecca's mother.

For the past three weeks, the Haleys have noticed dozens upon dozens of blankets ending up on their doorstep. And it's not just from people who live in Susquehanna Borough

"I got some from Michigan, Texas and Virginia," Rebecca added.

In the end, Rebecca ended up with 173 blankets, surpassing her goal of 100.

The Haleys will drop off the blankets at True Friends Animal Welfare Center Monday afternoon.
