BUTLER TOWNSHIP — Next Wednesday is Veterans Day, but one school in Schuylkill County kicked off the celebration of those who served a little early.

Nearly a dozen veterans made the long walk into the auditorium at North Schuylkill Junior Senior High School as part of the school district’s annual Veterans Day celebration.

“Students and technology leading the way and doing a tribute to the veterans,” said Principal Ken Roseberry. “We’re very excited because we’ve never tried it before.”

What made this year’s celebration stand out was students honored the veterans with a version of a live newscast, which featured hard-hitting interviews with veterans, investigative reporting on how much their teachers knew about Veterans Day and much more.

“We’re going into the history of Veterans Day,” said senior Liam Wolfe, who co-anchored the newscast. “We’re getting students involved in what they think Veterans Day means, what they want to do and what they already do to honor the veterans and just kind of give them the recognition they deserve.”

“It’s special,” said veteran Charles Hughes. “Getting close to the students out here and just camaraderie really.”

The school district has been putting on this assembly for years as a way for the students to better learn about the veterans who came before them.

“The students get to see these gentlemen and their struggles and their age coming up and I think that’s a powerful thing for them to see,” Roseberry added.

“Past wars are slowly being forgotten,” said veteran Frank Rice. “And we can’t have that because so many lives and so many good people were lost.”
