LOYALSOCK TOWNSHIP -- Township supervisors hope to put concerns about gun safety in their community to rest at a public meeting in Lycoming County.

There's no hunting without permission on private property in a rural part Loyalsock Township. Now and again neighbor Richard Spencer still hears gunshots.

"You know you hear it sounds like target practicing. Never had bullets fly by the door or anything," said Richard Spencer.

Spencer does not mind his neighbors target shooting on their property, but some residents in this community near Williamsport have complained to Loyalsock Township's Board of Supervisors.

"In regards to the noise. Just keeping people up. People not doing safe things," said Marc Sortman.

At a meeting last month, supervisors shared ideas for an ordinance that would control how far away someone must be from their neighbor's home to target practice.

"You would have to be 150 yards away from your neighbor's house," said Sortman.

While people may not have wanted to talk with us on camera about gun safety, the supervisors last meeting was so packed they have decided to hold their next meeting at the Loyalsock Volunteer Township Fire Company.

"People turned out in droves because word had gotten out there was an attempt to take gun ownership rights away," said Valerie Komarnicki.

Valerie Komarnicki says that's not the case she has volunteered to serve on a new committee made up of supervisors and community members.

"What I advocate is that we look at the ordinances that are already in place and we try to determine what avenues that we can take that might curtail or answer some of the concerns we have moving forward," said Komarnicki.

Loyalsock Township hopes to have a gun safety ordinance in place no later than the end of November.
