HONESDALE -- A hotel that's been closed for years is getting a new lease on life in Wayne County.

It was part of a bankruptcy auction last week.

From the looks of the defunct Delaware and Hudson Hotel on Terrace Street in Honesdale, no one has been checking in or out for some time.

But that's all about to change.

"There’s a tremendous positive impact on our community here over the last week here with the auction that took place," said longtime realtor Paul Meagher of Re-Max Wayne.

Meagher is talking about the future owners of the hotel who were the highest bidders during a bankruptcy auction last week. The Schwartz's own several other places including the Hotel Wayne and soon the vacant hotel.

"They are going to put a considerable amount of money into that. It will be upgraded and will be a wonderful facility," said Meagher.

Other than the Hotel Wayne here on one end of town, there aren’t many other places where people can stay. Now that the Schwartz family, which owns the Hotel Wayne, bought the old hotel there will be 20 more rooms at least for tourists when they come visit.

"We do have some hotels and bed and breakfasts downtown, but it’s not enough, so having an additional 20 rooms is great possibilities for this region," said Debbie Gillette, Executive Director of the Chamber of the Northern Poconos.

Ray Harrington is getting ready to build onto his R-3 Hardware store on Main Street near the former hotel. On the same block, Sonny's Bar and Grill is undergoing a major remodel. Harrington looks forward to having a place where company reps can stay.

"They don’t stay in Honesdale, they stay in Scranton," he said.

The new owners hope to have the old hotel up and running by April of next year.
