NORWEGIAN TOWNSHIP -- At a special meeting Monday night, PennDOT officials and consultants met with Norwegian Township officials and the public about a plan for a traffic light at a dangerous intersection in Schuylkill County.

Folks got a chance to weigh in on the final plan for the traffic signal at the intersection of Routes 901 and 209.

That is a place where township officials say many have died in fatal wrecks. They have been working for seven years to get a signal put in that spot.

"I’m elated. I really am. It's finally going to happen. We've tried very hard as a board of supervisors to get this thing done,” said Chairman Robert Kirwan of the Norwegian Township Board of Supervisors.

PennDOT officials said the hope is to start construction late next fall and perhaps have the light in and working by June of 2017. It’s something drivers said they are looking forward to.

"I come through this area like twice a week and it's very dangerous. It's a scary intersection. It's bad no matter which direction you're going. Cars pull out right in front of you,” said Dan Adam of Shoemakersville.

"I think it's a great idea. I've heard of a lot of crashes happening there, a lot of drunk accidents and just crashes and people pull out to go that way and you get hit,” said Emma Conville of Heckscherville.

PennDOT says the safety project will cost more than $1 million.

"It's not so bad when you're making a right turn to go up to Pottsville because you just have to look for the oncoming traffic on your left, but when you're going to make a left, right here, you know? It's hard for some people to see,” said Nick Karlaza of Foster Township.

"We want the red light. We've had too many dangerous accidents there. People died, and they shouldn't have,” said Kirwan.
