EAST STROUDSBURG -- A carjacking at knifepoint ended with a police chase on Interstate 80 and a suspect in custody.

That carjacking and chase started Friday morning in Mount Pocono.

Police claim an elderly man was forced at knifepoint to give up his car. What followed was a police chase on Interstate 80.

Eddie Quick of New Jersey was arraigned in district court late Friday afternoon for that carjacking

According to police, Quick pulled the elderly man's driver-side door open, assaulted him, tried to stab him, and then took off with his car.

That car had a handicapped placard in the front window.

The carjacking came to a dramatic end at the East Stroudsburg exit on Interstate 80 east.

Officers were frantically trying to stop this man who is now in police custody.

"Not only was he risking his own life, he was risking our lives and he was risking the lives of the public that were just traveling to work," said Pocono Township Police Officer Jack Manuel.

Officers on scene told Newswatch 16 an alert went out just before 10 a.m. to look out for a tan sedan with a handicapped placard in the window that was carjacked in Mount Pocono on Route 196.

According to court paperwork, the elderly victim, Richard Lebano, was on his way home when he thought he left his cell phone at Ray Price Ford.

He pulled over to look for it. That's when Quick yanked open the door to his car and told him to get out.

Quick allegedly punched the victim and then attempted to stab him.

Pocono Township Officer Jack Manuel was the first to spot it getting on Interstate 80 in Scotrun. Officer Manuel tried to stop him.

"The vehicle ignored the lights and sirens and entered the entrance ramp of Route 80 east bound."

Douglas Larsen says he lives right behind where the alleged carjacking began and says this is a lot for an empty building right now. Most people use this area as a turn around. He can't imagine what happened.

"Driving up and down Route 196 which is a state highway, anymore you give somebody a dirty look, they want to blow your brains out, it's a shame," said Larsen.

Police from Stroud Area Regional joined Pocono Township in attempting to box in the suspect near the four lane Route 209 exit.

"We attempted to box the vehicle in," said Officer Manuel. "The vehicle then attempted to hit me and run me off the road."

State police were able to put down "stop sticks" and disable the stolen car.

The suspect then hit a light pole and tried to run away before being arrested.

Officers say it was a group effort that ended this chase in only 10 minutes.

"As soon as the radio call goes out, we're able to converge on an area and work together and get the job done," added Officer Manuel.
