SCRANTON -- A tradition more than a century old took place to mark Columbus Day in downtown Scranton.

The Columbus Day Association of Lackawanna County laid a wreath at the base of the Christopher Columbus statue on Courthouse Square.

The group raises money for several charities, including the St. Francis of Assisi Soup Kitchen in Scranton.

The president of the association says the wreath laying is an important part of what it does.

"There's a lot of people proud of their heritage and that's basically part of this and what this is all about," said John Trama, president of Columbus Day Association of Lackawanna County.

The president of the group also tells us his grandfather is one of the people who fought to make Columbus Day a national holiday.
