JIM THORPE -- The fall colors are starting to make an appearance in Carbon County, just in time for one of the busiest weekends in Jim Thorpe.

It's the second of three fall festival weekends in the borough. It's usually extra crowded since many people have Monday off for Columbus Day and the tourists come out to see what Jim Thorpe has to offer.

"We're going to sight see in Jim Thorpe and then maybe taste some wine," said Miriam Fisher of Hamburg.

"We were just at the gorge to look at the fall foliage," said David Hamburg.

One group came from Arizona and New York City to check out the foliage which is expected to peak next week.

"The beautiful fall colors, it's very nice here," said Patty Zowada from Phoenix, Arizona.

"It's a nice change from the city," Lisa Richardson of New York City said.

Even the fall festival vendors enjoy the holiday weekend.

Gary Wagner of Lehighton was setting up his food stand. He's in Jim Thorpe every weekend and says you can never prepare for all the tourists.

"Bring extra everything. If you have to take it home, the coolers are always a little heavier at the end of the day, but it's ok," said Wagner.

One of the busiest places this weekend in Jim Thorpe, besides all the shops and the trains, will be at the Visitors' Center where thousands of people will come and check out what's going on.

"We expect 10,000 people, something like that. We get a lot of people from all over the northeast to come here," said Randall Sellers with the Jim Thorpe Tourist Agency.

Even though many people have off Monday, the fall festival is only Saturday and Sunday, but the scenic train rides should run on Columbus Day.
