BLOOMSBURG -- Environmentally friendly things are going on at the Bloomsburg Fair that many may not be aware of. The savings stretch throughout the entire fairgrounds.

The owners of the rides say over the last five years, they've started switching to LED bulbs on the rides.

Also, more and more recycling bins are popping up on the fairgrounds.

There are lots of trash cans on the grounds at the Bloomsburg Fair, but officials say more recycling bins are here this year.

"I think people are pretty good as far as their bottles and cans and things like that in the recycling bins," said Bloomsburg Fair President Paul Reichart.

Reichart says there are around 200 recycling bins on the fairgrounds supplied by the town of Bloomsburg. A state representative paid for additional bins this year. And with all of the soda and water bottles people go through, the bins come in handy.

"I'm glad to see containers here at the Bloomsburg Fair recycling because it's important that they don't fill the landfills," said plains township resident Mike Shinski.

The Shinski family say they recycle at home and are happy they can also do it at the fair.

"I think it's good for the economy, for the garbage, for the waste. I think it's a very good thing. I'm very glad to see that they have them," said Maryann Shinski.

Speaking of savings, Reithoffer Shows says about 95 percent of the rides at the Bloomsburg Fair have LED lights.

"It's been saving a tremendous amount of power," said Ricky Reithoffer. "We used to have to turn on another generator just when the lights came on at night and it's actually allowed us to not do that."

Reithoffer says the Ferris wheel was the first ride converted to LED lights. He says it used to be 400 amps now it's down to 14 amps.

"We did it originally for the beauty of the lights but when we started seeing the power savings and the money savings, it pushed us to do more and more of it."

Reithoffer says they plan to convert the rest of their rides to LED over the next year or so because they've seen such a large savings in energy and money.

Fair officials say they plan to expand their recycling program to include cardboard.
