BARRETT TOWNSHIP -- There could be new hope for an old resort in the Poconos. The former Buck Hill Inn is being auctioned off online. Bidding began Tuesday morning on the same website where The Mall at Steamtown was auctioned off.

The 125-acre Buck Hill Falls property and historic inn are up for auction at www.auction.com.

"We've had inquiries from actually all over the world, but I would say that most of the interest comes from people within a couple of hours drive,” said David Chant of Chant Realtors.

The bidding began at $350,000 and there have already been some bids placed, creating some excitement in Barrett Township.

People living in the township are wondering just what these potential buyers want to do with this historic property.

"I'd rather see something being done than just it sitting idle,” said Dimitri Kauriga of Greene Township.

The Buck Hill Inn was built in 1901 and once was listed as one of the top ten convention centers in the U.S. Realtors say the current owners have had the place on and off the market for the last five years.

With new indoor waterparks making a splash nearby and renewed interest in the Poconos, the sellers hope it’s the spark needed to move this property.

Several interested bidders have come to Buck Hill Falls Inn to take a look at the place and have several different ideas of what to do with the place if they win the auction.

"I would say that 50 percent of the people who have toured it, have the intention to knock it down, maybe do a development here, start over. We've also had a handful of people who have reached out to some strong local contractors in terms of restoring the building,” said Nicole Patrisso of Chant Realtors.

But many people who live in this area believe this property needs to be preserved, and worry what the future may hold for Buck Hill Falls.

“They should restore it because it's just like a piece of history I guess. It's been around forever,” said George Cruvatis of Barrett Township.

“I would not like to see it torn down. I love old buildings. That's why. But I do know there's an expense involved. There's an awful lot of money involved,” said Lenore Kauriga of Greene Township.

The auction ends Thursday. At the time of publishing, the bid stood at $650,000.

It could be a month before we find out who the winner is. They have 30 days to file the appropriate paperwork at the county courthouse.
