SHICKSHINNY -- The Shickshinny Volunteer Fire Department has been battling flames and saving lives for decades, but now, they're now fighting what they believe is an unjust law.

"I cannot imagine that the state police got involved in something like this,” said Holly Morris of the Shickshinny Fire Department.

She says the department is seeking legal help to fight against fines issued by state police. Troopers cited two firefighters over the weekend, who were holding a boot drive fundraiser and collecting donations along on Route 11.  State police say boot drops are against the law, and the firefighters were blocking traffic.

"No one was impeding traffic and everyone was dressed in their safety vests,” Morris said.

After state police cited the firefighters for soliciting business, they moved from the street to the sidewalk. But many people here in the Shickshinny community believe they shouldn't have been fined at all.

“I think it's wrong. Let them do what they want to do. I think, you know, it's sad. It is, to me,” said Marie Bedio.

“I think it's ridiculous. They should be be allowed to do what they want to do for fundraising. If they want to do it, let them do it!” said Ann Kanouse.

The Shickshinny Fire Department now wants to change the law.
