ROSS TOWNSHIP -- A road in Monroe County was shut for a few hours Monday morning after a bunch of cows got loose.

State police say a farmer from Saylorsburg discovered Monday morning that about 14 of the cows he just got Sunday night broke out of their fencing and scattered.

Kunkletown Road was closed to prevent vehicles from accidentally hitting the cattle.

Neighbors along with members of Northeast Search and Rescue tried to corral the animals. A veterinarian was called in to tranquilize four cows that would not move along willingly.

"Tons of local folks, everybody with a horse trailer and horses were out helping. Best part of being part of a community is everyone turns out. And of course the state police were phenomenal," said Dr. Christopher Corrado with Pleasant Valley Veterinary Hospital.

11 cows are back on the farm. The other three are believed to be hiding in a corn field.
