KINGSTON  --  The Wyoming Valley is coming together for Josh Simon, the 12 year old badly hurt in a crash that may have been caused by drag racing. Josh and two friends were hurt in that wreck last weekend in Kingston, and now fundraisers are planned for Josh and his family.

Students at Wyoming Valley West Middle School in Kingston have been back in class for only a couple weeks, but on Sunday the school year came to an abrupt halt for sixth grader Josh Simon. The 12 year old and two classmates were hurt in a crash.

Court papers say the wreck happened as two vehicles raced down Wyoming Avenue in Kingston. One of them plowed into Simon’s vehicle.

"I know that their family was very involved in helping out in the community, and now it's our turn to help them,” said Nichole Hampel, a teacher at the middle school.

The Wyoming Valley West Middle School is holding a fundraiser to help support the Simon family while Josh is at Geisinger Medical Center near Danville. He could be there for months as he undergoes several surgeries.

"He's a funny kid. He's got a good heart. He's got a lot of friends. We're all here to back him,” Hampel said, as her students are all busy making cards to send to Josh.

“Support from his friends might actually like cheer him up and be in a positive mood for all of us,” said Maura Dunn, a student.

Folks in the school aren't the only ones showing their support. Friends of the Simon family are also holding a fundraising event October 3 in the Nanticoke area.

“It's very heartwarming because there's a lot of people that don't know this kid and it's just a lot of love and community coming together to help somebody’s having a hardship right now,” said Wayne Daniels, a friend and event organizer.

For the Simon family, the community support has been overwhelming.

"The support from family, from friends from strangers is just, it's just amazing. You'd never think-- it wows me,” Ben Simon, Josh’s dad, said.

There is a GoFundMe page set up for him to help the family. There's also a fundraising event October 3.
