SCRANTON -- The Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church is serving up a lot of fun and flavors in Scranton.

Folks at the Annunciation Church are pretty excited about this year's fall festival. They say in 25 years this might be the best weather ever, so they got up early to make sure there was plenty to eat.

Before the start of the festival Wednesday morning at the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church in Scranton, things were really cooking.

"It's enough orzo to feed a nation, yes, it is and it's delicious!"

Helpers woke up early to make loads of lamb and masses of moussaka.

"The phone starts ringing with orders before 9 a.m.!"

Preparations for the festival start in June but now it is crunch time. Chicken takes about 90 minutes to cook and some were almost ready when we were there.

This is food made with plenty of agape, a Greek word for love.

"First time ever that we are blessed with this type of weather," said organizer George Vaitsopoulos. "Usually it rains. This time of year it is a little chillier, but thank God it is going to be fantastic!"

The goal is to raise money for the church on North Washington Avenue and to share the warmth of Lackawanna County's Greek community.

And don't forget to leave room for dessert.

"It's made with walnuts and honey, and everything. It takes a long time to make that," said church member Evie Anagnostou Witko .

But even with all that baklava, it's hard to find anything sweeter than Evie Anagnostou Witko's smile.

"The church in Scranton, I identify, I love the United States, it is my home, but it's my Greece."

The festival goes to 7 p.m. Wednesday through Friday, and if you can't eat everything, there is even a cookbook for sale.
