WILKES-BARRE -- There's always a lot to do at the annual NEPA Labor Day Festival in Kirby Park, like face painting, drawing in color books, and of course, rocking out to the entertainment.

"We're just out here enjoying the food, enjoying the weather," said Janice Whitaker of Wilkes-Barre. "My nieces and nephews danced today."

"I'm hoping to eat some good food and enjoy maybe some music and stuff, and my daughters are excited to use the bouncy house and the playground area," said Angel Gonzalez of Scranton.

The festival is put on by the NEPA Area Labor Federation, and it raises money for veterans.

"I love the way it just gathers the community together for one cause and one purpose," said John Walton of Bear Creek.

"Veterans are very very important. They don't become a veteran until they join the armed forces, and the armed forces we need drastically just to keep this world safe," said Irvin Weinrech, veteran.

NFL Hall of Famer Lou Michaels also came out to support veterans and meet fans. He said, "It's a great event!"

The amount of money the festival raises is dependent upon festival goers. Some folks here say they'll come back next year to do their part.

"I love this country. I love what it stands for, and it's a good thing the proceeds are going to benefit a couple organizations and one of them are veterans," added Gonzalez.

Whitaker said, "They fought for our country and we should be out here to support them. Hope to meet some of them."
