TUNKHANNOCK -- Nearly $4 million worth of renovations are underway at the Wyoming County Courthouse.

"I don't think our statue has ever been refinished," said Thomas Henry, Wyoming County Commissioner. "The carpeting inside and the doorways, it's just going to save us so much energy and the taxpayers money in the long run here. It's just way past due."

Among the additions are new air conditioning and heating, along with a new entryway made of bulletproof glass.

The Civil War Memorial outside will also be cleaned up as well.

"It needs it bad," said Jerry Diamond, a maintenance manager at the courthouse. "The hat is broken off the one guy. The bronze plaques need refinishing. It will look so much nicer when it's all done, when the construction is finished."

Underneath a pile of dirt outside are new propane tanks so the courthouse has the option in the near future to convert from diesel to natural gas.

Beverly Fraser and Merrill Ruth were on their way to pick up their marriage license. If they weren't excited enough already, the idea of a newly renovated courthouse made their smiles even bigger.

"It sure needed it," said Fraser. "It's nice. It's beautiful. [At least it's] going to be!"

Taxpayers shouldn't have to pay for a thing, since the county commissioner says the project is being funded with low-interest bonds.

Renovations on the outside of the building are expected to wrap up in the beginning of November.
